Degrees/Programmes

GBFE and its institutes respectively offer the following postgraduate studies:

  1. Honours Bachelor
  2. Master
  3. Promotion

Each GBFE institute is specialized in a different discipline.

 

1. Honours Bachelor of Arts resp. of Theology

The Honours Bachelor is a postgraduate study at UNISA. It is gained through one year of full-time study after the Bachelor's degree.

The GBFE institutes offer each postgraduate study in a modular concept enabling you to work full time while pursuing the degree. Depending on your chosen main subject and study aim you will pursue the Honours Bachelor at an appointed GBFE institute but will be able to study minor subjects at other GBFE institutes (max. 40 %) and therefore combine different study opportunities.

 

2. Master of Arts resp. of Theology

After a successful Honours graduation (or equivalent educational requirements) the Master's degree at UNISA can be pursued. The Master thesis is a mere research paper and shall count approx. 150 pages. You will usually have two assigned supervisors: a professor at UNISA and a tutor from the respective GBFE institute. In most cases the Master thesis can be written in German, French, Dutch or in another language instead of English. The standard period of study amounts three years.

There are two specialties when pursuing the Master of Theology:

  • Depending on the chosen theological discipline and its own educational requirements you can choose the "structured way" to finish the Master's degree: three short research papers followed up by exams and a comparatively short Master thesis.
  • For graduates without former theological education GBFE offers a special "Theological Foundation Programme" as a bridgeover.

3. Doctor of Literature and Philosophy (DLitt et Phil) resp. Doctor of Theology (DTh)

The Ph.D. students are directly supervised by GBFE. The doctoral programme is composed of a rather extensive research paper (at least 250 pages) and requires a Master's degree in the same area of expertise. The average period of study is five years.

All degrees are discovery-led. The respective topics have to be approved by the senate of UNISA. Not until then can the registration follow up.
